• Each selected school will constitute an energy team integrated by the different members of the educational community
- As in previous editions, 20 primary schools in the city whose energy and water consumption is maintained by the City Council may participate in the initiative
- 50% of the money saved by the schools (which in previous editions has been around 3,000 euros per center) will be returned to each one in the form of a non-repayable direct grant
The Local Government Board has approved the new call for the 50/50 school awareness program, corresponding to the 2025-2026 school year, with a budget of 103,134 euros. As is known, this is a municipal initiative that has a dual objective: on the one hand, to deepen the awareness of students through the implementation of sustainability measures in schools, and secondly, to achieve savings in energy and water consumption in schools as a result of the application of these measures.
After the approval of the bases by the Local Government Board, and once the announcement of the agreement is published in the BOP, the period will be opened for the implemented schools to submit their participation requests. As in previous editions, 20 primary schools in the city whose energy and water consumption is maintained by the City Council may participate in the initiative, committing to implementing a protocol of behavior, monitoring, and control of energy expenses that results in savings in energy and water consumption.
50% of the money saved by each school (which in previous editions has been around 3,000 euros per center) will be returned to each one in the form of a non-repayable direct grant to cover the specific objectives of each center. The other 50% will be allocated by the City Council to actions that allow reducing consumption and improving the energy efficiency of schools based on the incidents identified by the participating teams in each center.
As highlighted in the call’s guidelines, the action protocols assumed by each center are applicable to the entire educational community (management staff, representatives of the AFA (Association of Family Members of Students), teaching staff, students, cleaning staff, and dining service).
Each selected school will establish an energy team integrated by the different members of the educational community, where students have a special role. The teams will have specialized advice and will be responsible for carrying out the chosen energy and water saving measures, ensuring compliance with the project, transmitting knowledge to other students, and serving as a channel for participation for the whole center.
In fact, in addition to its energy and economic savings aspect, the project also aims to convey to children the need for energy saving due to its impact on reducing the carbon footprint and preserving the environment.
Among the measures that can be implemented in schools to achieve energy savings results, some suggestions include the installation of motion sensors in bathrooms, regulating the flow of water from the courtyard fountains, installing restrictors on water taps to reduce the amount that flows out, switching corridor lights to LED technology, posters to turn off computers, or sealing windows and doors to prevent heat loss or cold entry, among others.
