The Government Board has promoted this Friday the change of use of the warehouses on Guatla Street, which will become of a functional nature and on which a green area will be enabled for the use and enjoyment of the neighborhood. This was announced today by Councilor Juan Carlos Caballero, spokesperson for the local government, after the meeting of the Local Government Board in which it was approved to start the modification of the General Urban Planning Plan, PGOU, to change the use of the warehouses. «Today we bring good news to this neighborhood: it is news that does not come from offices, but is the result of active listening with the citizens, of sitting down with them, listening to their demands, and the needs of the neighborhood,» emphasized the councilor.
«And it is also the result of acting in accordance with what the neighbors request. That is why the city council has started the modification of the planning to reclassify the functional land of the interior of the block courtyard of this neighborhood so that this space, which was going to be a student residence that the neighbors did not want, can become public facilities and green areas for the residents,» explained Caballero.
Until now, the planning considered the qualification of this space in the San Antonio neighborhood (district of Saïdia) as tertiary. Once the modification of the PGOU is definitively approved, the use will become functional, allowing for the adaptation of citizen facilities and a new green area for the neighborhood. The City Council unanimously approved almost a year ago to suspend the processing and granting of licenses for land parceling, building, and demolition in the block of houses formed by the streets Sagunt, Pare Urbano, Luz Casanova, and Sant Bru as well as on Guatla Street, in the Saïdia district. From that moment on, the City Council began drafting the documents for the specific modification of the Urban Planning Plan for the implementation of the new municipal facilities in the area.
Initially, it was planned to enable a student residence in these warehouses, but following the agreement of the corporation, they can be converted into public facilities for the enjoyment of the neighborhood.
As Councilor Juan Carlos Caballero explained, «as in many other projects, in this initiative the City Council is working hand in hand with the residents of the San Antonio-La Saïdia neighborhood and, therefore, after learning about their discontent regarding the planned use for the warehouses, the first decision was to deny the project license.»
From municipal services, it has been noted «that in the San Antonio neighborhood there is a lack of certain public services and green areas in proximity.» Specifically, deficient indicators of social services centers, day care centers and elderly care, youth services, and ultimately local facilities are mentioned. Therefore, the opportunity to dedicate this space to new public facilities and a nearby green area that can address some of the mentioned deficiencies in addition to the urban regeneration of the area was emphasized. For this purpose, the City Council will undertake the detailed reclassification of the Enlargement to the Local System of Free Spaces and Public Service.
