Bernabé urges the ‘popular’ party to explain themselves: «And if not, just ask the gentleman who fled to the US for reasons unknown».
The Minister of Science, Innovation, and Universities and Secretary General of the PSPV, Diana Morant, has reproached the Popular Party for «backing away from solutions» by considering the negotiation with the Government to support the anti-tariff decree as broken. «They couldn’t care less about the problems of the Spanish people».
This is how the socialist minister expressed herself to the media in Alicante, where she attended the May 1st demonstration.
Morant wanted to «emphasize» something that, in her opinion, «cannot go unnoticed»: «A few weeks ago, with the likely crisis and the impact that the tariffs imposed by the Trump Administration could have on our productive sectors, on producers, on livestock farmers, on farmers, on our companies, on many companies here in Alicante, the Government of Spain immediately, in fact, the president met with unions and businessmen and the employers’ association to provide a response, as always, of protection. The Government of Spain has approved a package of measures worth 14,000 million euros».
«And very soon, that royal decree will have to be approved and validated in the Congress of Deputies. And hours ago, we have learned that the PP once again backs away from solutions, that once again they will not live up to the expectations of this country,» she lamented.
For the minister, this position «clearly responds to two issues.» The first, she said, is that «they couldn’t care less about the problems of the Spanish people, they care nothing for farmers, livestock farmers, affected sectors, the steel sector, they care nothing in the face of the tariff crisis, just as they have done in previous crises».
And the second is that «they always defend the interests of the same and in this case, they are defending the particular interests of energy companies».
«After the blackout on Monday, we know, the government knows, that the energy sector is very important in our country and, therefore, the solution to crises always has to involve protecting citizens from those possible weaknesses and vulnerabilities. No one can guarantee that things like the blackout won’t happen, no one can prevent Trump’s tariffs, no one can prevent a pandemic, but what can be done is to respond politically and rise to the occasion,» she asserted.
Morant emphasized the «contrast between the government of Pedro Sánchez, which always rises to the occasion in crises, always rises to the occasion by protecting citizens, and the Popular Party, which is never there when people need them.»
THE PP «NEVER STANDS UP AND MAZÓN NEITHER»
«The Popular Party was not there to raise the minimum interprofessional salary, the Popular Party was not there to raise pensions, the Popular Party has not even been there to approve aid for the victims of the dana. In short, the Popular Party is never there. By the way, Mr. Mazón is also not here today, neither in Alicante nor in the Valencian Community,» she pointed out in reference to the ‘president’, who is on an institutional trip to the United States.
Regarding the commemoration of May 1st, she stated that «the Government of Spain will be on the streets, alongside the working class, alongside the unions, to defend labor rights».
«We have been doing this for all these years. People know that we are the Government that raises the minimum interprofessional salary, that revalues pensions, that we are the Government of the labor reform that has led to historically low levels of temporary employment in our country today. We are the Government that, despite crises and with protective measures, has increased the number of Social Security affiliates to levels never seen before in history, more women working, more young people working than before, for example, when our scientists used to leave this country, now they live in our country and are contributing to the transformation of the productive market and productive sectors,» she claimed.
And she recalled that this is the government that will approve a law to reduce the workday next Tuesday at the Council of Ministers. «So we are in a new May 1st. There is still much work to be done, but we can also celebrate the achievements in workers’ rights that have taken place precisely with progressive governments and, in this case, with the government of Pedro Sánchez,» she concluded.
In the same vein, the Government Delegate in the Valencian Community and Secretary of Equality of the PSOE, Pilar Bernabé, who participated in the march convened in Valencia, expressed herself.
«LAST DEMONSTRATION OF 40 WORKING HOURS»
«This is probably the last May 1st demonstration of 40 working hours thanks to the efforts of a government led by the Socialist Party,» she emphasized.
«And today is also a day to remind the Popular Party that they had the best opportunity to stand by the workers by supporting the first package of measures that a country in Europe puts in place to protect the workers in the sectors most affected by the tariff crisis,» she asserted.
However, she criticized, the PP «will vote against these measures, using as an excuse to introduce a debate that is not the one in which this protection of workers should be framed, in order to extend the life of nuclear power plants and remove taxes from energy companies».
«This is the policy of the Popular Party. Today would be a good day, the day of workers, to answer to the Spanish people why they vote against it, and if not, they should ask the gentleman who has fled to the United States supposedly, for reasons unknown. But the best way to fix the tariffs is to support the measures of the Government of Spain,» she concluded.
Finally, she expressed the support of the Socialist Party for the class unions, UGT and CCOO, who «are now threatened by the far right and by irresponsible governments that even threaten to cut their subsidies».
