The City Council of València, through the General Directorate of People with Disabilities, and the Consorci de Museus de la Comunitat Valenciana, presents on Thursday, May 5th, a pioneering project in the field of cultural inclusion.
This is the feature film Inclusion – Beyond Cinema, the first easy-to-read adaptation of a film made in Spain in collaboration with the association Mi Cine Inclusivo and Plena Inclusión CV. The production is directed by the Valencian filmmaker, Miguel Ángel Font, and has been specifically adapted for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
This special event, to be held in the Refectori room of the Centre del Carme Cultura Contemporània from 6:00 pm to 8:30 pm, will offer a barrier-free experience for all audiences that intertwines cinema and accessibility.
Following the screening, there will be a discussion with professionals from the social and cultural fields, as well as participants in the project. Additionally, for the first time, a documentary video about the creative process will be presented, with explanations from individuals with intellectual disabilities.
A documentary in six chapters
This feature film explains how Miguel Ángel learned to make inclusive cinema, «a way of making films for everyone to enjoy, including those with disabilities.» The production is divided into 6 parts: Rumbo a Xmile, El cine de los sentidos, De lo accesible a lo inclusivo, Las barreras del cine, Academia y transferencia, and Un futuro ya presente.
Through these chapters, the author shares his beginnings in the audiovisual communication world, his early short films, and his approach to accessible cinema. His first film came in 2019, titled Swing, where he realized that the film industry is not ready to make the necessary changes for inclusion. From there, Miguel Ángel worked to create more inclusive films. He obtained his doctorate and began explaining his approach to inclusive cinema at universities and festivals worldwide. He collaborated with Disney to improve inclusive cinema and engaged with politicians and educators to make education and cinema more inclusive.
The production concludes by discussing the future as already present and the progress made thanks to the work of disability associations and the changes occurring in film laws, production companies, television, streaming platforms, and artificial intelligence.
100% accessible and free access
This is a 100% accessible and free activity for all audiences, marking a milestone towards a truly inclusive and accessible culture. Its aim is to ensure equitable access to culture for all people, providing access for individuals with reduced mobility, sign language interpreters, live subtitling, loop systems, and audiovisual content adapted for individuals with visual and hearing impairments.
The General Director of People with Disabilities, Javier Copoví, stated that this event «reinforces our commitment to a fairer, more participatory, and accessible city for all people.» He added that inclusive cinema «is possible and necessary because everyone has the right to enjoy and understand cinema. We must encourage more directors to write accessible scripts and also encourage individuals with disabilities to work in the film industry.»
Additionally, printed copies of the easy-to-read guide for the film will be distributed in both Spanish and Valencian during the event. It can also be requested via email at hola@micineinclusivo.com to obtain the digital format.
