«A year ago, we set a goal to focus on quality tourism over quantity. Today, I can say that the data show a decrease in cruise passengers from the first quarter of 2024 to the first quarter of 2025. This decrease in cruise passengers—13% from the previous year and 6% annually—has not negatively impacted the city’s tourism. We aim for quality and are selecting quality cruise passengers.» The Mayor of Valencia, María José Catalá, highlighted the commitment to quality and sustainable tourism by the City Council of Valencia, on the occasion of the Port Authority’s board meeting at the Clock Building.
Catalá emphasized, «We are very pleased with the progress of the working group established by the Port Authority and the City Council. We are achieving our goals, helping each other, and collaborating.» In March 2024, the number of cruise passengers was 26,932, while in the same month of 2025, it was 26,479. Therefore, there has been a decrease of 453 cruise passengers, a 1.68% decrease. In the first quarter of the previous year, cruise tourists numbered 65,608, while in the first quarter of 2025, there were 56,810, resulting in a decrease of 8,978 cruise passengers, a 13.41% drop.
Looking at annual data, from April 1, 2023, to March 31, 2024, the number of cruise passengers was 815,577, while between April 1, 2024, and March 1, 2025, it was 765,269. This decrease of 50,308 cruise passengers, a 6.17% decrease, is one of the figures highlighted by the Mayor to confirm the municipal commitment to quality tourism.
Overnight Stays and Travelers
«In that sense, the positive tourism data in the city show that these decisions are not affecting the city’s tourism sector, and I will give you an example. During the first quarter of 2025, we have managed to surpass the data from the second-best year in history, which was the first quarter of 2023, in both overnight stays and travelers. Therefore, the conclusion is that we are better selecting our tourists,» stated the Mayor of Valencia.
Regarding overnight stays and the total number of travelers recorded in the city of Valencia, it is worth noting that the increases in the first quarter of 2025 were 7.1% and 4.4%, respectively, compared to 2023. All this despite adverse weather conditions in March and the lingering impact of the storm from October 29, 2024.
Decrease in Tourist Apartments
The highest municipal authority also revealed that «from August 2024 to February 2025, the number of tourist accommodation properties in Valencia has decreased by 1,500. This means that the moratorium implemented by this government is working.»
For the Mayor of Valencia, the public policies implemented by the City Council have generated «quality tourism over quantity; a legal tourism offering, and, above all, good results for our tourism sector.» «We are very pleased to present the results of this commitment that this government has made to sustainable, quality tourism in the city of Valencia,» Catalá concluded.
