The City Council of València has started the integral rehabilitation of the municipal complex of Abastos, one of the most emblematic buildings in the Arrancapins neighborhood. The execution of the works is carried out by the company Compañía Levantina de Edificación y Obras Públicas (CLEOP) and has a budget of 1.5 million euros. It is expected to be completed within a maximum period of 12 months. The municipal intervention focuses on five areas of the architectural ensemble: main facades (Alberic and Bon Orde streets); facades and exterior elements of the right wing; passage facades; the skylight roof of the right wing and the passage, as well as the exterior pavements and the hall.
The mayor of València, María José Catalá, visited the Abastos complex on Thursday and highlighted that “since 1990 no intervention had been carried out. It had several problems, especially with water leaks, the state of the pavement, the entire exterior structure in general, and the cladding. The approximate execution period is one year and it will be done in phases, as it is a building that is in use and will continue to carry out all its activities”.
“I am very proud to have been able to fulfill my word two years after starting this term and start working on a pending debt with our old Abastos Market, which is one of the most significant and symbolic elements of the city of València,” added the mayor.
The rehabilitation works will focus on the building envelope, facades, and roof, mainly carrying out repairs of cracks in the facades, elimination of moisture due to runoff in the factories and stone ornaments, repair of detachments of coatings on the cornices and eaves, repair of stone ornamental elements, and reconstitution of damages in the moldings.
Also, the necessary repairs of pillars, beams, and concrete slabs will be carried out, replacement of broken glass in the stained glass windows of the porticos and skylights, removal of corrosion in non-structural elements, as well as anchoring or replacement of detachments in facade claddings, and removal of dirt and bird droppings.
To prevent the nesting of pigeons in the building, which causes excessive dirt due to droppings, the technical project includes the installation of an inhibitory system with ultrasonics to scare them away. Finally, the cleaning and repair of the entrance hall floor of the institute and sports center and the water leaks through the skylight of the sports complex and common passage will be carried out.
The execution of the integral rehabilitation of the Extramurs district complex was awarded on April 4, 2025, to the company CLEOP for a total amount of 1,518,663.92 euros. The basic and execution project has been drawn up by the Boreas Technical Consultancy.
An example of rationalist architecture
The Abastos building is classified as a Local Relevance Asset (BRL) and is a significant example of rationalist architecture in the city. Designed by the architect Javier Goerlich Lleó, its construction began on December 1, 1940. After various interruptions, the intervention definitively concluded on June 28, 1948, making it currently 77 years old.
The building occupies two complete blocks, with a total area of 23,800 m2. The original architectural ensemble, that is, the buildings and their parts, the spaces that relate them, and the perimeter fence of the plot, are considered of heritage interest.
The building is surrounded by interior streets separated from the outside by a large iron fence with limestone pillars. Originally, in addition to the sales stalls, it had administrative offices, public weighing, registered species office, veterinary inspection service, tobacconist, and cafeteria, among others. Currently, it houses the Abastos High School, a National Police station, and the facilities of the sports center and municipal swimming pool under the Municipal Sports Foundation (FDM).
