Virginia Maestro and Juan Carlos Lax release ‘Los alambres del otoño’, a song about guilt
Singer-songwriter Virginia Maestro has released ‘Los alambres del otoño’, the first single from ‘Sábanas Tendidas’, a project led by Valencian poet Antonio Expósito and Murcian musician Juan Carlos Lax, under the NBL Música label, owned by Fran Perea and Víctor Elías.
This is the first preview of an EP that contains 5 songs –accompanied by as many music videos– and a long list of guests, including «some of the main artists and producers in this country». The goal: to use art to share and raise awareness about the importance of mental health.
Antonio Expósito explains the origin of the initiative: «I have been living with obsessive-compulsive disorder since I was 6 years old, back in 1992. Until 2021, I kept it a secret. For a while, I didn’t know how to express what was happening to me. And for the rest of the years, I was ashamed to make it public and tell my family and friends about it. In November 2021, I met Juan Carlos Lax, thanks to his work in the musical ‘Solitarias de estreno’, which I saw at the Teatro Lara in Madrid».
«I had written some sonnets and my dream was to see them turned into songs. When we met for the first time, I had written two sonnets: ‘Los alambres del otoño’ and ‘El himno de la cuna’. I was able to explain the meaning of these two poems, thanks to the work I had been doing with Fran, my psychologist, in therapy sessions. We decided to start shaping our first joint project. We agreed that it had to be a process with a lot of care and that for its development we had to work with artists and producers who excited us».
In this way, a work has emerged that narrates, through music and poetry, the feelings of a person living with obsessive-compulsive disorder. In the first installment, the protagonist is guilt, an intrinsic emotion in human beings that manifests itself in different ways in the various cultures around the world.
BETWEEN POP AND FOLK
The production of ‘Los alambres del otoño’ bears the stamp of Diego Galaz, a member of Fetén Fetén, who has taken the song into a territory between pop and folk, supported by a piano, a can of paprika, a saw, and various string instruments such as the guitar, the mandola, the violin, the hurdy-gurdy, and the water violin. Soon, the rest of the releases will see the light of day: ‘El himno de la cuna’, with Coque Malla as the protagonist, deals with the internal struggle experienced by an adult with a somewhat childish personality; ‘El arte de ensuciarse las manos’, sung by Miguel Campello and Aldhara, is a fable about OCD; ‘La Plaza de los Ciegos’, with Javier Ruibal on vocals, is a song about reconciliation with the absent father, and ‘Las ganas de vivir de las pistolas’, with Santero y los Muchachos, tries to explain, in a rather graphic way, the dark side of human beings.
