The City Council has opened a public tender for the execution of the energy efficiency improvement works at the Russafa municipal market, proposed by the Department of Commerce and Markets. This project has a budget of 2.3 million euros and the works are expected to last a maximum of eight months. Interested companies can submit their proposals electronically on the Public Sector Procurement Platform until 23:59 on May 22, 2025.
As explained by the Councilor for Commerce and Markets, Santiago Ballester, «commercial activity requires that the interior conditions of the markets invite their use, thanks to adequate levels of temperature, ventilation, ambient humidity, and lighting. This requirement must be combined with greater energy efficiency in order to reduce the carbon footprint and contribute to the overall goals of reducing energy consumption.»
As detailed in the contracting file prepared by municipal services, «the Russafa market currently has an air conditioning system of considerable age, affected by numerous breakdowns and using unsuitable refrigerant gases. The overall condition of the building requires the renovation of both thermal installations, lighting, fire protection, as well as certain improvements to the architectural part of the building.»
According to technical reports, it is also necessary to complete the planned action with the update of the fire protection and lighting system, as well as include work on roofs, carpentry, and various items related to the planned goal of improving the building’s energy efficiency.
The drafting of the technical project for the improvement works at the Russafa market and those of Algirós, Rojas Clemente, and Torrefiel was awarded to the company Runitek Ingenieros SL. The financing for the execution of the improvement works at the Russafa market, amounting to a total of 2,330,879.40 euros, is fully covered by municipal funds.
The planned adaptation and improvement actions include:
- Complete replacement of the building’s air conditioning and ventilation system.
- Complete replacement of conventional lighting and emergency installation.
- Complete replacement of the fire protection system installation.
- Improvement of carpentry and waterproofing of the roof.
- Improvement of finishes and coatings in different areas of the market.
- Adaptation of rainwater downpipes that currently have evacuation problems.
- Sealing of market corners, providing tightness to the market envelope.
- Replacement of the seven automatic doors for market access.
- Rehabilitation, filling, and waterproofing of poorly maintained eaves.
- Installation of sun protection visors using sandwich panel on skylights located on the south side of the market.
- Installation of perimeter lifeline on the roof.
- Adaptation of existing concrete benches on the roof to support production equipment by raising them with lightweight concrete like arlite.
- Acoustic shielding adaptation to fit the dimensions of the new production equipment to be installed on the roof.
The Delegation of Commerce and Markets has specified that the winning entity must pay special attention to the use and characteristics of the building. Consequently, the works must be carried out considering that the daily commercial activity of the market must be maintained, which will require the company to continuously adapt the work schedules throughout the entire project execution.
