The Executive Commission of Compromís has unanimously approved this Monday to maintain the proposal for the appearance of the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, in the investigation commission of the dana and to reevaluate the pact with Sumar in the Congress of Deputies. It will propose «a change in the functioning of the plurinational group» and will transfer its bases and conditions to «maintain this new relationship.»
This decision comes after a meeting of more than two hours called due to the discrepancies that arose within the Valencian coalition. Més, their majority party, proposed the departure of the Sumar group after Yolanda Díaz’s party did not accept Compromís’ proposal for the investigation commission, which included calling Sánchez to testify. Iniciativa opted for continuity with Sumar and for expanding the confederal space.
For now, Compromís has indicated that the objective will be to establish a new framework of relationships that guarantees the «full autonomy» of the member parties and horizontal relationships, in a confederal group similar to the Plural parliamentary group where they participated in the previous legislature.
In this way, they consider it «essential» to be able to deploy «all legislative and government control instruments,» as well as to «maintain a bilateral and direct relationship with the Executive at a crucial moment for Valencian society, after the demonstrated negligence of the Consell in the management of the dana disaster and the lack of agility of the central government in the necessary recovery of the affected area by the disaster.»
BEING IN CONGRESS «IN A DIGNIFIED AND VALENCIANIST WAY»
After the executive meeting, the Compromís deputy in Congress, Àgueda Micó (Més), explained that the three ‘legs’ of the coalition have «aligned» their positions by considering that the Valencian political project must be «above all» to «participate in a dignified, Valencian and leftist way in a plural group.»
In her opinion, it is possible to defend the interests of the Valencians while being «comfortable» working in a group that implements «brave and transformative policies,» something that she hopes the other formations that are part of Sumar in the Lower House will understand.
«Now it’s time to talk to them, to see if they accept these agreements. At this moment, all scenarios are open and on the table,» she said, and she advanced that by the end of the week they will explain how the negotiation is going.
Micó believes that in Sumar they are «willing to discuss everything» and that the first step is to establish the foundations of that negotiation, so it is «not a matter of maintaining a standoff» but of bringing together all the sensitivities of a plurinational group.
Regarding the dana commission, she pointed out that the Valencians need «answers» and that the Government should «explain» about the reconstruction, so they want «all members» of the central Government to testify. When asked if Sánchez should be part of the first list of witnesses or do it later when the reconstruction is analyzed, she indicated that it will be negotiated within the commission itself.
MORE VOICE IN MADRID AND BILATERAL RELATIONSHIP WITH THE GOVERNMENT
On his part, the Compromís deputy Alberto Ibáñez (Iniciativa) has stated that there is a «shared» roadmap in the coalition after a week of negotiations and has called for «prudence» in the conversations with Sumar to advance in the agreements.
The goal, he emphasized, is to «have a greater voice in Madrid, to be able to implement all possible tools, and, above all, to have a bilateral relationship with the Government of Spain to fulfill the agenda that the Valencians requested when they cast their votes in the elections.»
When asked if this is an ultimatum to Sumar, he expressed confidence that all the parts that make up the plurinational group «will understand it, will share it,» and will progress in it during this week.
Ibáñez argued that Sánchez must «clarify the tools for reconstruction, the investments made, and, above all, future policies to mitigate climate change so that we do not have another dana.»
And the representative of VerdsEquo and deputy in Les Corts, Paula Espinosa, has advocated for initiating a «reevaluation process» of the relationship between Compromís and the Sumar group, as well as for maintaining Sánchez’s appearance in the dana commission.
