The city of València joins, once again, the commemoration of the International Day of Cultural Diversity, established by the United Nations General Assembly to raise awareness about the importance of intercultural dialogue, diversity, and inclusion. For this purpose, the digital screens in the Town Hall square, from which the city council sends messages to the citizens, will showcase this day tomorrow, May 21st, with various activities that «highlight the daily work carried out by the City Council, transversally, to advocate for the richness that diversity brings.»
«It is a day to promote the equality of rights, duties, and opportunities for all people and to foster coexistence,» stated the Councilor for Social Services, Marta Torrado, recalling «initiatives funded by the City Council» to promote intercultural coexistence in the city and informing about some specific events that will be held as part of the international commemoration.
In the same line, the Councilor for Cultural Action, Heritage, and Cultural Resources, José Luis Moreno, has announced activities scheduled for this week, as well as «others that reflect how the city’s cultural centers decentralize and promote diversity through various artistic disciplines such as music, dance, and gastronomy throughout the year.»
Awareness day with educational and recreational activities
Regarding the specific events that will take place tomorrow to celebrate cultural diversity, Marta Torrado detailed that the project known as «Apuja el to contra el racisme» from the Social Services Council, which, in collaboration with the Education Council, promotes interculturality among students in València, will hold an event where several primary schools in the city will participate, with cultural diversity being the main focus.
In addition, the Justice Foundation, which implements the program «Barrios vivos e interculturales,» has organized a storytelling session in Orriols on May 31st to «emphasize the importance of coexistence among people of different backgrounds»; and the Intercultural Association Candombe will hold a cultural event in Nou Moles on June 7th, featuring musical activities, workshops, and other recreational and educational proposals.
«Through these initiatives, Valencia reinforces its commitment to diversity and builds a more inclusive and enriching community,» stated the councilor, adding, «the celebration of the International Day of Cultural Diversity invites us to reflect on the importance of valuing and promoting coexistence among all people, regardless of their origins, as well as the value of the daily work carried out by the City Council to build a more inclusive, respectful, and enriching city for all its inhabitants.»
Cultural and awareness proposals
On the other hand, José Luis Moreno highlighted some of the cultural activities that will take place in the coming days, such as the «Poliglotonía» meeting scheduled for tomorrow, May 21st, at the Abben Albar Cultural Center, where stories, music, and culture of various countries will be discussed through gastronomy.
On Friday, May 23rd, the Escorxador will host the show «Visibilizando,» a theatrical proposal composed of various monologues that «represent the diversity of feelings generated by being a migrant,» performed by members of the Funtun Sensitization Group, «a collective that blends art and anti-racism, creating spaces for reflection and critique.»
Furthermore, on Saturday, May 24th, at 6 pm, the Alquería d’Albors Cultural Center will host the Intercultural Dances meeting, «an initiative open to the public to share an afternoon of celebration, showcasing the diversity of this neighborhood and promoting encounters through dance, flamenco, Chilean cueca, capoeira, belly dancing, Easter Island dances, and the marinera.»
«But from the Culture Council, we celebrate diversity, mutual recognition, and intercultural coexistence throughout the year,» reiterated the councilor, referring to the recent launch of new cultural centers that «have further emphasized the structuring and decentralization of projects and initiatives that integrate proposals from different cultures and origins, promoting diversity and inclusion in their content, weaving ties among all groups that shape and enrich the city’s sociocultural landscape.»
Within this framework, the Nave 3 Ribes Center recently hosted the Festicultural Hispano 2025 València in April, with the participation of over 300 individuals and 13 cultural entities from 6 nationalities; and on Sunday, the Reina 121 center was the stage for «Llars invisibles,» a dance performance that «narrates the displacement of those whose homes are being erased.»
